BLACKSBURG, VA -
Senior Francisco Velazquez and junior A.J. Garabedian teamed in doubles action to post the lone Saint Joseph's victory on the third day of action at the 2004 Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Men's Regional Championships held at the Burleson/Burrows Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus.
The twelfth seeded doubles tandem, Velazquez and Garabeidan notched an 8-6 victory over Columbia's Mark Clemente and Rajeev Emany to reach the Round of 16. Up next for the duo are the the third-seeds Mark Barry and Malcolm Scatliffe of Penn State on Sunday at 2:00 PM. The SJU doubles tandem defeated Scatliffe and Barry last weekend at the Army Shootout, 8-6.
In other doubles action, junior Antonio Aniello and sophomore Jimmy Holland were edged in a tie-breaker by eighth-seeded Akshay Rao and Scott Robbin of Columbia, 9-8 (7-3).
Singles action did not play out as well for the Crimson and Gray. Velazquez, one of the 17-32 seeds, was upended by Princeton's Josh Burman 6-4, 7-6 (7-2). Holland, meanwhile extended Penn State's Ryan Berger, also a 17-32 seed, to three sets before coming up short. He fell 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the round of 64.
The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the November 4-7 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at the University of Michigan. Seventeen ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women are taking place over the last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country.
