SJU Men Knock Off Boston College at ECAC Tennis Championship

FLUSHING MEADOWS, NY - The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team wrapped up the weekend with a solid 5-2 victory over Boston College at the 2004 ECAC Championships at the USTA National Tennis Center. With the win SJU placed 13th at the event which featured the region's top 16 teams.

The Hawks jumped on top early be securing the doubles point with a couple of tough victories. The tandem of Francisco Velazquez and A.J. Garabedian topped B.C.'s Arton Bogdanovich and Chris McCoy by a 9-8 count at number one. SJU also received a narrow 9-7 victory from Jimmy Holland and Antonio Aniello over Soma Kesthely and Derrick Chou at number two. Chris Spencer and Michael Portonova dropped an 8-2 decision at number three.

In singles, the Hawks captured four of six matches, as three SJU players were extended to a third set super tie-breaker.

Holland and Aniello got thing off to a good start for SJU winning in straight sets at number two and five respectively. Holland notched a 6-4, 6-1 win, while Aniello was victorious 6-1, 6-3.

Velazquez and Van Homer Pangilinan each needed a super tie-breaker to earn wins. Velazquez fought back against Bogdanovich at number one, 3-6, 6-3, 10-7. Pangilinan also came from behind, winning 5-7, 6-2, 10-3.

Portonova lost in a super tie-breaker after winning the opening set, 3-6, 7-5, 10-7 at fourth singles and Garabedian was downed 6-3, 6-2 at number three.
