EASTON, PA (03/25/03) - The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team, playing primarily freshmen and sophomores, is quietly putting together one of the best seasons in the program's recent memory. With yesterday's 6-1 defeat over Patriot League power Lafayette (9-2-1 overall, 2-2-1 spring), SJU now stands at 8-5 on the season. The last time the Hawks reached this many wins in the spring season was 1981 when Al Laveson's squad recorded a 10-5 record. The school record for wins is 15, set in 1971.
Sophomore Jimmy Holland improved to 18-10 on the year with a straight-set whitewashing at #2 singles of Matt Coin, 6-0, 6-0. Classmate Chris Spencer also was handily, 6-3, 6-3 at third singles. Sophomore Van Homer Pangilinan was a 5-7, 6-4 (7) victor at fourth singles, and freshman Antonio Aniello put together a 6-2, 6-1 win at #5. Another rookie, Greg Chang, put the finishing touches in the singles action with a 6-3, 6-3 win at #6.
SJU also captured the doubles point as Holland and freshman A.J. Garabedian teamed up for a 8-5 victory at first doubles. Sophomore Francisco Velazquez and Pangilinan were 8-4 winners at second doubles.
Next up for the Hawks is Saturday at Fordham at 1 pm.
