Laid out in a natural bowl in the center of Saint Joseph's campus, Finnesey Field has been the home of Hawk athletic teams since 1929. Originally constructed for football and opened in 1929 with plans for an eventual 70,000-seat stadium, the field has undergone numerous changes over the years. In 1960, both the original grandstand and hillside seating were eliminated for the construction of Villiger (now Post) Building/Bluett Theater. That construction necessitated raising the field's level some five feet above its earlier location. In 1990, the facility's usage was greatly expanded with the installation of artificial turf. That expansion continued in 1994 when lights were added. During the summer of 2001, the Field received a facelift when new turf was installed. Finnesey Field is currently the home of SJU track & field, field hockey, men's and women's soccer and men's and women's lacrosse. Previously, it played host to the football, baseball and softball teams. Adjacent to Finnesey Field stand the Finnesey Courts, home to the Hawk men's and women's tennis teams since the late 1940s. Prior to that SJU primarily played its home matches at the nearby Narberth courts. When courts were first built on campus, they were located where Bellarmine Hall now stands. Due to Bellarmine's construction in the summer of 1960, however, the Finnesey courts were torn down and rebuilt in their current location. After briefly disappearing in the late 1990s due to Mandeville Hall's construction, the courts were refurbished in the summer of 2000 to provide a better playing facility for the athletes. From the East: From the Ben Franklin Bridge (via Rt. 676) or the Walt Whitman Bridge: Follow Rt. 76 West to exit 33 (Rt. 1 South, City Avenue). Make left on 54th Street and then right into parking lot. Courts are straight ahead. From the South: Rte. 95 North to 476 North. Follow 476 North to exit 3 (Rt. 1). Follow Rt. 1 North to SJU, approximately 10 miles. Make right on 54th Street and right into parking lot. Courts are straight ahead. From the West: PA Turnpike to Exit 24 (Valley Forge).
