Despite winning the doubles point and picking up key victories from juniors A.J. Garabedian and Chris Spencer, the Saint Joseph's men's tennis team dropped a tough 4-3 decision to Navy at the Severn Valley Tennis and Fitness Club.
SJU got off to a good start by sweeping all three doubles matches. Garabedian and senior Francisco Velazquez picked up an 8-5 win a first doubles, Spencer and senior Van Homer Pangilinan then won 9-7 at second doubles and junior Antonio Aniello and freshman Zach Dixon won 8-3 at third.
Garabedian picked up an easy 6-1, 6-1 straight set win at third singles over Adrian Lai to put the Hawks up 2-0.
Trailing 2-0, Navy rallied as Brandon Carter recorded a 6-1, 6-2 win at number one over Velazquez, Davy Lee posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Aniello at number two, and Stanley Kahl picked up a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Pangilinan at number 4.
Navy held a 3-2 lead with two matches still to be decided, and both were extended to three sets. Navy's Haley Dodson ended the match with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory at sixth singles over Dixon. Spencer closed out the scoring by winning the days final match 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 over Alex James at number five.
