Saint Joseph's University senior men's tennis standout Francisco Velazquez has been named to the 2005 Atlantic 10 All-Conference team. He is the only Hawk to be named to the All-League team four times.
One of the team's captains, Velazquez was a four-year starter at both first singles and doubles during his career. He ranks as the program's career leader with 64 singles wins and 68 doubles wins. He ranks second in career wins at #1 singles with 32. As a team SJU won 42 dual matches during his career (2001-05), the winningest four-year span by SJU in nearly a quarter century (1973-76).
This past season Velazquez posted a record of 25-14 in doubles, teaming primarily with junior A.J. Garabedian. In singles, he was 12-22 overall.
St. Bonaventure senior Mario Arce was named the Atlantic 10's men's tennis Most Outstanding Performer, Mustafa Gencsoy of George Washington was named Most Outstanding Rookie Performer and Dayton head coach Steve Brumbaugh was tabbed Coach of the Year in voting by the league's coaches. Dayton's Rob Altenau was selected as the Student-Athlete of the Year in a separate vote of the Conference's sports information directors.
Joining Velazquez, Arce and Gencsoy on the All-Conference team are Jake Jopling and Matt Treadgold of George Washington; Dayton's Altenau and Tom Murphy; Doug Banker, Jeppy Moss, and Derek Schwandt of Richmond; St. Bonaventure's Nikhil Murali and Alejandro Nery.
