The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team dominated the competition at the West Point Open Jan. 20th and 21st. The Chirico brothers led the charge for the Hawks, taking first place in the First Flight Doubles bracket and battling each other for the title in the First Flight singles bracket. Junior Jarrett Chirico beat his younger brother Chris in the finals, 6-1, 6-1 to take first place.
Matt Glasgow, Phil Bayliss, and Pat Adams each earned fifth place finishes after losing in the first round and then winning two straight back draws. Glasgow, slotted in Second flight, lost his first match 6-4, 6-3 and then going on to win 7-5, 6-4 and 6-1, 6-0. In third flight action Bayliss suffered a tough loss in the first round, going 6-7(2), 6-3, and then 11-9 in a super tiebreaker. Bayliss won his next two matches, 6-2, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-2.
Adams ` first round play was much the same as he lost 3-6, 7-5, 12-10(stb). In the back draws, Adams won 6-4, 6-3 and 6-0, 6-3 to finish fifth in the fourth flight bracket.
Also in the Fourth Flight bracket, Nick Tuxen won the first round match, advancing 6-3, 7-6 (7) over Justin Salkin of Binghamton. Brent Kahl was then subbed in for Tuxen, and was defeated 6-1, 6-3 by Tyler Deck. Tuxen was then brought back in to play the third place match-up, in which he fell 3-6, 7-5, 10-7(stb).
Freshman Lucho Perez-Abreu earned third place honors in the Fifth Flight bracket after shutting-out Dale Madan of Rutgers 6-0, 6-0, falling in the second round 7-5, 2-6, 10-8 (stb) and then defeating Rohan Patker of Rutgers, 6-1, 7-5.
The title for Sixth Flight came down to another Hawk v. Hawk match-up as Phil Garabedian and Matt Prusack squared off in the final round. Despite Prusack being more rested, Garabedian pulled out another Super Tiebreaker win to take first. Garabedian won his first round match 2-6, 7-6, 10-5 (stb) and the second round 6-2, 4-6, 10-7. Prusack won his first round match-up 6-0, 6-0. Brian Costello then saw some action as he subbed in for Prusack, winning 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the finals. Prusack was then subbed back in to face Garabedian.
In doubles action, the Chirico brothers won the First Flight bracket going 8-4, 8-3 and 5-1 (retired due to injury). Bayliss and Tuxen teamed up to earn a third place finish in the Second Flight bracket winning 8-6, then falling 9-8 (4), and then winning 8-4. Perez-Abreu and Adams paired in Third Flight doubles winning in the first round 8-5 and losing in the second 8-4 before Costello and Prusack subbed in for the third place match-up and lost 8-3.
Also participating in the tournament were Army, Binghamton, Colgate, Marist, and Rutgers.
The Hawks return to action Wednesday, January 31st when they travel to Penn.
