BRONX, N.Y. - Playing at Atlantic 10 rival Fordham on Saturday evening, the Saint Joseph's women's tennis team put forth a strong effort, but fell to the Rams, 4-0.
SJU's Amanda Nava and Isis Gill-Reid opened the match with a 7-5 victory at the top doubles flight. Despite getting strong showings at the second flight from Laura Gomez and Lourdes Sprinckmoller, and Maureen Devlin and Katherine Devlin at the third, the Hawks fell 7-5 in both matches as the Rams jumped out to a 1-0 lead.
Moving to singles play, Fordham was able to earn wins at the second, third and sixth flights to post a 4-0 team victory.
"A close doubles, but the a strong Fordham squad put the battling Hawks away comfortably in the singles," said SJU head coach Ian Crookenden. "There was too much firepower on the other side of the nets for the Hawk ladies to break down except for Amanda, who won her second set before the match was clinched."
The Hawks are back in action on Tuesday against Navy at 3 p.m. at the SJU Tennis Complex.
