Saint Joseph's University Incoming Student-Athlete Checklist
Admissions
Be sure you have received your official acceptance letter from the Saint Joseph's University Admissions Office. If you did not, contact the admissions office to be sure your application is complete.
Once you receive the official acceptance letter, complete the enrollment confirmation form and submit your security and housing deposit by May 1.
Log in to the my.sju.edu website and click on the "NEW HAWKS" tab. On this site you will be able to find out important deadlines for housing and meal plan options, placement tests, and additional freshman information. (Do not ignore the deadlines. Your coach does not take care of this for you!)

Saint Joseph's University Varsity Sport Screen
If you are a recruited athlete, or you have informed the sport coach of your intention to be part of the team for the upcoming season, you are to complete the Varsity Sport Screen Questionnaire. The Varsity Sport Screen Questionnaire will be assigned to you through the ARMS Software System and should be completed no later than August 1. The information you provide pertaining to your athletic career will be used for your bio on SJUHawks.com and for other publicity purposes.
Â
Pre Participation Physical Exam
All Student-Athletes are required to complete a pre-participation physical exam (PPE), by SJU team physicians prior to starting team practice. You can find the PPE form here.
All incoming Student-Athletes (freshman/transfers) will have the physical scheduled on campus shortly after arrival and prior to the start of the first scheduled practice. A copy of the physical form that was submitted to SJU Student Health Services is not acceptable for athletics.Â
Please note:Â Incoming Student-Athletes (freshmen/transfers) are required by the NCAA to provide proof of a sickle cell trait test. This is often done at birth and your pediatrician should be able to provide you with the document. If the document is not available you will be required to get tested.Â
Fall Sport Participants
Field Hockey, Men's and Women's Soccer, and Men's and Women's Cross Country return to campus for practice prior to the first day of classes. Information regarding dates and times and on-campus arrangements will be sent by each head coach at least two weeks prior to the start date to recruited prospects. If you are interested in trying out for a fall sports team, please contact the head coach.

Frequently Asked Questions
I am interested in participating on a varsity sport team, i.e. as a walk on; when are tryouts?
Each team will have designated dates for tryouts. For fall sport participants (i.e. tennis, cross country, field hockey and soccer) you are to contact the Athletic Department, 610-660-1707, to get dates and times for tryouts.
What do I need to do before I try out?
Complete the following:
• Pre participation physical exam (PPE) - The PPE form can be accessed by clicking here (PDF). The PPE form will be collected by your team athletic trainer.
I sent in a physical form to SJU Student Health Services. Do I still need to submit a physical form to the athletic training staff?
Yes all participants will need a physical. For athletes trying out for the team, the student health form is acceptable for the tryout period. Please provide a copy of that from along with the filled out PPE form (PDF). A waiver can be signed for the sickle cell trait test for the tryout period. If you make the team you will have a physical scheduled with SJU team physicians and provide proof of your sickle cell trait. Â
I did not register with the NCAA Eligibility Center. Can I still try out?
Yes. Recruited student-athletes are able to practice with the team, but not compete, for 21 days (non-recruited student-athletes for 45 days). After that 21-/45-day time period, a student-athlete must be registered and certified by the NCAA Eligibility Center to practice and compete.
I am trying out for a fall sport and must report for practice before school begins. Will I be moving into my assigned room?
No. In most situations incoming freshmen are assigned a room for the time they will spend on campus during the August practice period.Â
Can I bring all my belongings with me when I report for practice?
No. Since you will be assigned temporary housing, only bring the items you will need for practice and overnight stay. Coaches will contact you with more detail as the arrival date for practice draws near.
I am trying out for a sports team. If I do not make the squad, when do I need to depart campus?
In the event you do not make the squad, you will be able to remain on campus for a short time period to allow for travel.
