MONROEVILLE, PA (04/12/03) -- Saint Joseph's bounced back in the Atlantic 10 Championships on Saturday with a hard-fought 4-0 win over Dayton (13-17). With the win, the Hawks advance to play George Washington for fifth place in conference. With a win, it will be the best A-10 finish in SJU history.
The Hawks (12-6) won the doubles point, as a result of wins at first and third doubles. Sophomores Francisco Velazquez and Van Homer Pangilinan teamed up for an 8-4 win at #1, while freshmen Greg Chang and Antonio Aniello earned an 8-3 win at #3. Freshmen Jimmy Holland and A.J. Garabedian were leading 6-5 at #2, but was not finished with the doubles point in hand.
In singles, Holland garnered a straight set, 6-3, 6-4 win at #2, while Pangilinan was a 6-3, 6-4 victor at #4. Aniello had to go three sets at fifth singles, taking home a 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 6-1 win. Velazquez (6-1, 3-6, 3-4), freshman Chris Spencer (4-6, 7-5, 3-3), and Chang (5-7, 7-5, 1-0) did not finish their matches once the outcome was settled.
