For the first time since the 1977-78 season, the Saint Joseph's women's tennis team downed Villanova as the Hawks snapped its 23-game losing streak to the Wildcats with a 4-3 victory Wednesday evening at Finnesey Courts.
The two teams opened up play with individual competition as the Hawks and Wildcats split the six singles matches with Saint Joseph's claiming wins at No.1, No. 2 and No. 5 singles. Junior Stephania Velazquez downed Villanova's Jaclyn Williamson 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 at first singles, while freshman Jennifer Kedzierski improved to 5-0 on the season with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Leighann Reilly at second singles. Hawks' sophomore Krysta Contino, playing in her first singles match this season, downed Taryn Cappellini 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.
With the score tied 3-3, the match came down to the doubles portion of the match. Saint Joseph's earned an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles as Velazquez and Kedzierski downed Villanova's Candice Carlin. The Wildcats evened the doubles portion with an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles, but the Saint Joseph's duo of junior Gina DiGiacomo and senior Marisa Donelson captured the match for the Hawks with a 9-7 decision over Carla Erksine and Colleen Walter.
Saint Joseph's returns to action Saturday, September 19 as it hosts Fordham at 1 p.m.
