SAINT LOUIS, Mo.--The match up of the two top teams in the Atlantic 10 fell short of its expectations as the Billikens scored five first half goals enroute to a 8-0 win at Hermann Stadium.
The Hawks never threatened the 13th-ranked Saint Louis squad, as the home side took control of the game from the opening whistle. Scott Wisniewski struck a shot past SJU goalie, Bryan Benedict (two saves) in the 13th minute of play. It was Wisniewski's fifth of the year and it was assisted by Brian Grazier.
Fourteen minutes later, the Billikens put another goal past SJU when Kyle Patterson knocked the ball home from six yards out. Ninety seconds after that, Patterson added another to make it 3-0 Saint Louis. Less than a minute after that, Patterson made it a natural hatrick when he put the Billikens up 4-0 after a Beau Bellomy pass into the middle.
After Patterson's triplet, other Billikens wanted to get in on the act as Calum Angus added a fifth in the 36th minute.
In the second half, the Hawks sported a new look with senior goalkeeper Mike McBride taking his turn in between the pipes for the first time in his Hawk career. The welcome for McBride by Saint Louis was short-lived as Bellomy scored his third goal of the year just over a minute into the half.
Eleven minutes after the Bellomy goal, Charles Bryce inundated McBride's net with four consecutive shots, with the fourth reaching the back of the net in the 58th minute for the 7-0 lead. In the process, McBride made two of his team-high three saves in that sequence.
In the 62nd minute, Pat Duddy had an opportunity to get the Hawks on the board with a penalty kick, but SLU goalkeeper Pat Disbennet made a save to preserve the shutout.
SLU capped the scoring in the 89th minute on a Jimmy Holmes penalty kick.
Saint Joseph's drops to 5-9-1 overall and 4-2-0 in the Atlantic 10. Saint Louis improves to 10-2-3 overall and 6-1-0 in the A-10.
SJU travels to Charlotte to take on the 49ers at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
