Men's Tennis Shuts Out Richmond Spiders, 7-0

PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team took on the Richmond Spiders at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center in Philadelphia, Sunday, February 18th. The result was a convincing victory for the Hawks as they defeated the Spiders by a margin of 7-0. SJU started out the day winning all three of its doubles matches against the Richmond. Jarrett Chirico and Phil Bayliss teamed up to win 8-7(7) in first flight doubles. In the second slot, Phil Garabedian and Matt Glasgow won 8-4 and Nick Tuxen doubled with Pat Adams to tally an 8-2 win.

Their success in doubles carried over to the singles portion of the match. SJU's number one player Jarrett Chirico won his match easily with scores of 6-4 and 6-0. Phil Bayliss played out a hard-fought match winning 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 in the number two spot. Matthew Glasgow won his match to clinch the victory for the Hawks in 3 sets to make the overall score for the day 4-0. Even after the Hawks had cemented the win for the day, they still continued their strong play and won their final three matches to make it a 7-0 shutout against their A-10 rivals.

Chris Chirico sat out the match against Richmond due to an injury. The Hawks improve their conference record to 2-0 and their overall record to 4-3. SJU returns to action Saturday, February 24th at Princeton. Match time is set for 11:00 am.
