SJU Women's Tennis Team Falls at Villanova, 4-3

VILLANOVA, PA - Saint Joseph's women's tennis team echoed "The Hawk Will Never Die" motto Monday at rival Villanova. Unfortunately for SJU, the Wildcats earned crucial singles wins to down the Hawks 4-3.

Saint Joseph's dropped the first point of the match to Villanova as the host Wildcats swept all three doubles matches.

Switching to singles matches, the Hawks grabbed their first two points of the match, earning wins at the top two flights. Senior Stephania Velazquez posted a 7-6, 6-3 win over Jaclyn Williamson at No. 1 singles, while sophomore Jennifer Kedzierski downed Carla Erksin 7-6, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.

The Wildcats regained the edge with wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, while SJU senior Lauren Kuhmerker tied the match with a 6-0, 5-7, 7-5 win over Lyndsey Lostritto at No. 5 singles.

With the match coming down to its final point, Villanova's Daniella Phillis earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over the Hawks' freshman Elizabeth Sitzler (Medford, NJ/Shawnee).

With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 1-1 on the season. The Hawks return to action Wednesday, September 26 when they host Delaware.
