FAIRFAX, Va. - The Saint Joseph's men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision at George Mason on Wednesday night. Mason put away the game-winning goal in the 25th minute and held off the Hawks for the victory. Bryan Benedict made five saves in the loss.
The Patriots dominated the first half as they took 15 shots to SJU's four. Irvin Martinez capitalized on a shot as he took a pass from Richard Edgar who received the throw-in from Jonathan Borrajo to put Mason up, 1-0.
Mason (4-2-1) remained the aggressor as they earned four corner kicks, while the Hawks didn't take one. Benedict kept the Hawks in the game making five first half saves.
Saint Joseph's (1-2-1) came to life in the second half when Jason Lewis's shot was saved by Mason's Sean Kelley (four saves). The rebound caromed to Colin Baker who hit the post for the Hawks' best opportunity of the game in the 52nd minute.
The second half was a chippy affair as GMU was tagged with two yellow cards early in the stanza before Giacomo DiLisi received one. All three cards were assessed within a three-minute span.
Lucas Pardew added an insurance goal in the 75th minute to seal the outcome for the Patriots.
For the game Mason out shot the Hawks 26-9, held a 7-0 advantage in corners, while SJU committed 16 fouls to the Patriots' 11.
The Hawks will travel to New Jersey and take on Rider October 4.
