The Saint Joseph's women's tennis team capped its 2008-09 season with an 11th-place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships. The Hawks fell to ninth-seeded George Washington late Saturday evening at the Club 4 Life.
Seeded 12th, the Hawks had a solid showing at this year's conference tournament, posting a 1-2 mark and finishing tied with Fordham for 11th. Having topped St. Bonaventure earlier Saturday, Saint Joseph's fought hard against the Colonials, but unfortunately fell in its season-finale.
George Washington won the doubles point, capturing both the first and third flights. Senior Krysta Contino and sophomore Maggie Mullaney were within 5-4 at No. 2 doubles before GW earned the other two wins.
In singles, the Hawks got solid performances at all six flights, but the higher-seeded Colonials proved to be too much, claiming wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 singles.
Despite the loss, it was a successful season for the Hawks under first-year head coach Ian Crookenden. Senior Krysta Contino will graduate the all-time leader in wins at No. 5 singles, while junior Jennifer Kedzierski has established herself as one of the top players in SJU history, accumulating 35 career wins for third all-time.
With an experienced core of letterwinners returning and a talented class of newcomers, the Saint Joseph's women's tennis program will be on the rise.
