PHILADELPHIA -
The Saint Joseph's men's soccer team dropped its fifth one-goal game of the season as it fell to Massachusetts, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Finnesey Field. The Minutemen stole the win with a late second-half goal, despite freshman goalkeeper Michael Moulton's efforts in net with a career-high 10 saves.
Saint Joseph's and Massachusetts traded shots from the start of the game. Each team took five shots in the first 17 minutes while Moulton made three saves in the span.
In the remaining minutes of the first half, the Minutemen outshot the Hawks 5-1, while SJU's lone shot from senior Colin Baker was saved by UMass' goalkeeper Chris Piekos.
The second half was an even battle between the teams as they traded shots again, each with six, while Moulton stopped five of the Minutemen's shots.
At the 80:21 mark Minutemen's Ben Arikian made a backwards pass to teammate Bryant Craft. Craft blasted a high ball that Moulton got his hand on, but it sailed into the back of the net to make it 1-0.
At the 83:43 mark, Saint Joseph's had a near goal when Baker sent freshman Ryan McFadden on a breakaway with a through-ball but unfortunately for the Hawks the referee would call a handball.
Moulton's 10 saves in the game give him 79 on the season for a .790 save percentage.
The Hawks return to action on Friday when they travel to Charlotte. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
