MERION STATION, Pa. - The Saint Joseph's men's tennis squad opened its 2010-11 season with a resounding 7-0 victory over Rider at the SJU Tennis Complex at the Maguire Campus on Wednesday afternoon. Junior Peter Cognetti won his singles match in straight sets and teamed with junior Jeff Kessler to shut out the Broncs in the top doubles flight as well. No Hawk dropped a set in the match.

Cognetti was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over John Spellman in the fourth singles flight after he and Kessler won their doubles match, 8-0.

Sophomore Alex Veronis was a winner in the first flight, taking down Rider's Rollie Malfitano 6-1, 6-0. Junior Paul Ganev won his first match as a Hawk by a 6-1, 6-1 score over Drew Laverty at second singles.

Sophomore Tommy Gates took down Milo Milosovici, 6-0, 6-3, to win at number-three singles. Freshman Dan Barrus and Paranjay Malhotra earned victories at fifth and sixth singles, defeating Rob Olsen 6-0, 6-1 and Ryan Carpenter, 6-4, 6-4, respectively.

In doubles play, Veronis and Ganev notched a shutout victory, 8-0, in the second flight, while Gates and Malhotra partnered for the 8-2 decision in the third.

Saint Joseph's will host its second annual SJU Fall Invitational this weekend. Matches will be held Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at both the SJU Tennis Complex and on Finnesey Courts.
