Slattery Named to Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team

Dec. 11, 2012

PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's junior Emma Slattery has been named to the 2012 Philadelphia Inquirer Women's Cross Country Academic All-Area Team. Slattery is one of seven student-athletes selected for the honors, as voted by the sports information offices at the 28 institutions in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. In order to be eligible for Academic All-Area, an athlete must be in her second year at the institution and hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better.

On the course, the junior standout led the Hawks in five of her six races this season. She finished in the top ten four times, including seventh-place finishes at the TCNJ Blue/Gold Classic and ECACs and eighth-place finishes at the Princeton Invitational and Atlantic 10 Championships. Slattery finished 33rd out of 120 runners at the Paul Short Invitational and recorded personal bests in the 5k at A-10s (18:03.3, team best) and the 6k at Princeton (21:54).

Slattery, who is majoring in biology and minoring in autism studies, was also selected to both the A-10 All-Conference and All-Academic teams. Additionally, she has made both the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll and SJU Athletic Director's Honor Roll all four semesters of her collegiate career.

"Emma is a star in the classroom, a star on the cross country course, and a star in life," said head coach Kevin Quinn. "She makes everyone around her better."
