Women's Rowing Varsity 8 Wins Seventh Consecutive Season Opener

March 10, 2012

PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's rowing team turned in strong results across the board racing Drexel, Delaware and La Salle on the Schuylkill River while the Varsity 8 posted a decisive result in winning its seventh consecutive season opener.

The Varsity 8, consisting of: c- Katie Messina, 8- Amanda McEvoy, 7- Felicia Gojmerac, 6- Taylor Biesiada, 5- Gabriella Parker, 4- Bridget Dempsey, 3- Arianna McDevitt, 2-Jackie Castorino, and 1- Kelsey Larzelere, posted a time of 6:50.1, which was more than 10 seconds ahead of second place Drexel.

The Hawks 2nd Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 posted solid results in two tightly-contested races. The Freshman 8 finished third in its first collegiate race, which was the first race for most of the crew.

"There is a lot more speed in all of our boats including the Varsity 8," said head coach Gerry Quinlan. "Some of our issues in the Freshman 8, 2nd Varsity and Four were with execution. We will focus on that for the Jesuit Invitational Regatta next weekend."
