MERION STATION, Pa. - The Saint Joseph's women's tennis team capped its regular season with a strong performance against local rival Villanova. The Hawks won their third straight match with a 6-1 win over the Wildcats and will head to the Atlantic 10 Championships with a 13-10 record.
Coming off dominant performances against St. Francis (N.Y) and Rhode Island, Saint Joseph's jumped out to the early lead over Villanova winning the first and third doubles matches for the opening point. Casey Robinson and Aurora Davis teamed for an 8-4 victory at the top flight, while Kelly Mulquin and Devi Jadeja were 8-5 winners at the third flight to put the Hawks up early.
On the singles side, the Hawks would hold the Wildcats at a distance en route to winning five of six matches to earn the 6-1 victory.
Robinson was a winner in three sets at No. 1 singles, posting a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory. Davis followed with a 6-2, 7-5 victory at the second flight, while Jadeja was taken to three sets at No. 4 singles, but prevailed in the end, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0. Mulquin and Roy capped the match with wins at the fifth and sixth flights, respectively, with Mulquin earning a 7-5, 6-2 win and Roy posting a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
The Hawks now turn their attention to the Atlantic 10 Championships later this week.
