Jimmy Reilly Lifts Men's Soccer Past Temple, 1-0

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's men's soccer team handed Temple its first loss of the season as the Hawks downed the Owls, 1-0, on Saturday evening at Sweeney Field. Senior midfielder Jimmy Reilly scored the match's only goal off of an assist from sophomore midfielder Tim Lazorko in the 61st minute. In a game of many firsts, Saint Joseph's earned its first victory of the season and its first win over Temple since 2007 and head coach Don D'Ambra collected his first victory over the Owls as head coach of the Hawks.

"It was great," said D'Ambra of the victory. "We've had three double-overtime matches here that ended in draws, and Temple's a big rivalry. They were undefeated. We had a lot to play for and our guys came out with a lot of energy. They played a good brand of soccer. I feel like we outplayed them for a large portion of it, and I was happy that they were able to hold it out. Temple pressed us toward the end, and to come out with a win like that is really good for the program and where we're at in the season right now."

The goal unfolded in the 61st minute as Lazorko dribbled his way around a Temple defender. Lazorko geared for the cross and put the ball in front of the goal, where Reilly was positioned. Lazorko earned his sixth career assist as Reilly buried his shot into the low, right corner to give the Hawks the 1-0 advantage.

The tally was the first that Temple (4-1-0) has allowed on the season and marks the second of Reilly's career on Hawk Hill.

"All week in practice and all season so far, we've been really trying to get our outside midfielders to the back post," said Reilly of his game-winner. "Finally I got there, and I know coach [D'Ambra] is happy about that. There was a scramble in front, somehow the ball found its way through, and I found it on my foot and tucked it in the corner."

For the match, Temple held a slight advantage in shots (8-6) while each squad landed two shots on goal. The physical match saw 29 fouls, with SJU owning 18.

Redshirt senior goalkeeper Andrew D'Ottavi (1-1-3) made two saves, in the 27th and 57th minutes, to earn his second consecutive shutout of the season and seventh of his career.

The Hawks will travel to Loudonville, N.Y. to take on the Saints of Siena this Wednesday, September 18. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on the Siena Turf Field.
