Men's Soccer Drops 3-0 Match to Davidson

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's men's soccer squad fell to Davidson, 3-0, in Atlantic 10 action on Thursday evening on Sweeney Field. The Hawks now stand at 7-6-4 overall and 2-4-1 in conference play.

"It was a tough match," said head coach Don D'Ambra. "Davidson came out with a lot of urgency and intensity. They were really sharp and had us on our heels a little bit. We ended up catching up to the pace of the game and it ended up being very competitive toward halftime. We made a couple of young mistakes that cost goals and Davidson is too good; they capitalized on every one of them . . . We just couldn't recover. Sometimes you have to tip your hat to the opponent. They were the better team tonight."

Davidson (10-2-4, 4-2-1 A-10) struck first in the 12th minute as, off of a corner kick, John Pace quickly dished the ball of to Christian Fechter. Fechter gave the ball right back to Pace, who had come a few feet up off of the corner, and put it into the left side of the net.

The Wildcats then scored back-to-back goals in the 61st minute. Valeriy Sviderskiy assisted on Maxi Pragnell's tally and, 29 seconds later, Pragnell would race down the right sideline and find Sviderskiy inside the box for the final score.

Davidson owned a 15-8 advantage in shots, including 10 of the second half's 12, and held an 8-5 edge in corner kicks, earning four of five in the second half.

Senior forward Mike Glazer and senior defender Jake Nelson led the Hawks with two shots apiece, while Nelson headed SJU's only shot on goal in the 22nd minute of play.

Freshman goalkeeper Bobby Edwards (5-5-4, 2-4-1 A-10) made four saves in a full-match effort.

Saint Joseph's will close out the regular season this Sunday, November 9 against Dayton. Tied for ninth in the A-10 with La Salle prior to this evening's match, SJU falls to 10th with seven points while Dayton currently sits in the eight spot with eight points. Dayton will play La Salle tomorrow evening in Philadelphia.

"With other results on Friday in the A-10, hopefully the Dayton game means something and we could have a shot at making the playoffs," added D'Ambra. "We'll have to wait and see."

Start time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Sweeney Field. Prior to the start of the match, the SJU men's soccer program will recognize its five seniors - Tommy Brooks, Mike Glazer, Jake Mulinge, Jake Nelson, and Brandon Stevis - in a Senior Day ceremony scheduled to begin at 12:50 p.m.

MATCH NOTES: Starting defender Tommy Brooks and midfielder Matt Crawford were unavailable for the match due to yellow-card accumulation and a previous red card, respectively... Sophomore defender Coupar Lipp made his first start since September 7 in place of Brooks... Freshman Mike Akinkoye made his second career start in place of Crawford for a career-high 63 minutes... The Saint Joseph's men's soccer program honored the South Jersey Elite Barons Youth Soccer Academy in its Youth Soccer Club Appreciation Night; all players in attendance participated in the player introductions and, during halftime, were acknowledged, scrimmaged on the field, and came together for a group photo.
