MEDIA, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team earned its first victory of 2014 on Friday night, defeating Quinnipiac by a score of 6-1 at the Springton Indoor Tennis Club. The Hawks took the doubles point for an early lead and then won five of six singles points to secure the win.
Saint Joseph's (1-1) received strong performances from a number of individuals. Jose Sierra earned wins in the top flights of both singles and doubles, while second-flight pairing Pierre Brondeau and Andres Urrea locked down two wins apiece as well.
"Pierre and Jose led with very strong performances against some excellent opponents," said head coach Ian Crookenden. "The team played well and competed hard. A very nice result."
Also winning for Saint Joseph's were freshmen Kyle Chalmers and Tristan Boustany, who won matches in the fifth and sixth flights, respectively.
"The Navy match [two weeks ago] allowed our boys to go in against a solid team with much more confidence in the tight situations," Crookenden said. "Our doubles was solid and the freshmen playing in fifth and sixth singles came through."
Quinnipiac (4-2) won the third doubles flight match and took its lone point with a win in third singles.
The Hawks return to Springton Indoor Tennis Club on February 14 when they host former Atlantic 10 rival Xavier at 8:00 p.m.
