NEWARK, Del. – The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team ran its winning streak to eight on Thursday, taking down Delaware by a 5-2 score. Kyle Chalmers and Andres Urrea each won matches in both singles and doubles play on the afternoon.
“It was a tough match under windy and cold conditions,” said head coach Ian Crookenden. “Our boys played tough and demonstrated excellent composure. It was a convincing performance.”
Chalmers and Urrea teamed up for an 8-6 win in the second doubles flight while Pierre Brondeau and Paranjay Malhotra also notched a win by the same score in the third flight to secure the doubles point for SJU.
After the Blue Hens rallied for wins in each of top two singles flights, the Hawks took flights three through six to earn the victory. Dan Barrus won his third flight match, 7-6 (4), 6-3, before Urrea was a 6-4, 6-0 straight-sets winner in the fourth. Chalmers battled back from a set down in the fifth for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win, and Tristan Boustany finished the match with a 6-3, 6-1 win in the sixth flight.
The Hawks will host a pair of matches this weekend, as SJU's men's and women's teams host Duquesne on Saturday and Lehigh on Sunday at the SJU Tennis Complex.
