Women's Tennis Drops Tight Match At Richmond, 3-2

RICHMOND - Facing one of the top teams in the Atlantic 10 in a shortened match, the Saint Joseph's women's tennis team battled stroke for stroke with Richmond Saturday afternoon, but ultimately fell, 3-2, to the host Spiders.

Playing four singles matches and a doubles match, the Hawks (8-5) dropped the first point of the day in doubles play, but bounced back with wins at No.1 and No. 4 singles. At the top flight. Aurora Davis posted a 6-4, 6-1 win against Melissa Kandinata, while Kelly Mulquin downed Katya Salas, 7-5, 6-3 at the fourth flight.

Unfortunately for SJU, the Spiders would prevail in the second and third singles matches to earn the 3-2 win.

"We were very close to pulling an upset over perennial A-10 power house Richmond, but a tough 7-6, 6-4 loss at No. 3 singles let Richmond maintain there winning record against the Hawks," said head coach Ian Crookenden. "Juniors Aurora Davis at no. 1 and Kelly Mulquin at No. 4 gave us hope, but in the shortened four-plus one format it was not enough to make the difference. A very tough tight match. The ladies are deservedly feeling they belong in the top half of the conference and next week ends with three A-10 matches road trip should be great."

The Hawks host Drexel on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
