MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team won its 10th match of the season on Tuesday afternoon, taking down Drexel by a 6-1 score. With the victory, SJU improved to 10-4 on the season.
“The boys continue to roll, playing comfortably, and raising their intensity when needed,” said head coach Ian Crookenden. “I think we are ready for a tough conference match against Fordham on Saturday.”
The Hawks opened the match by taking the top two doubles flights for a quick 1-0 lead. Pierre Brondeau and Jose Sierra were 8-4 winners in the first flight, while Kyle Chalmers and Andres Urrea claimed an 8-6 win in flight number two.
All four were singles winners as well, as was Tristan Boustany. Sierra and Brondeau recorded straight-sets wins in the top two flights, while Urrea battled from a set down to win in the fourth.
Chalmers led his fifth-flight tilt before his opponent retired due to injury, and Boustany capped off the day with a straight-sets victory in the sixth flight.
The Hawks will take a few days off before facing five opponents in as many days. SJU hosts Fordham on April 5 before Sacred Heart and Lehigh come to town on April 6 and 7, respectively. Saint Joseph's then visits George Mason on April 8 before crosstown rival La Salle visits the Maguire Campus on April 9.
