FAIRFAX, Va. – The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team split its singles matches on Tuesday, but George Mason secured the doubles point to earn a 4-3 victory.
“We played a hard-fought match under windy conditions,” said head coach Ian Crookenden. “The absence of senior Dan Barrus due to injury hurt us in the third doubles flight, and everyone had to move up a position in singles, but we still gave a good account of ourselves.”
The Hawks got singles wins from senior Jose Sierra in the first flight, sophomore Andres Urrea in the third flight, and freshman Tristan Boustany in the fifth.
Sierra blanked Jimmy Davis in the first set of their first-flight match before winning a tiebreaker in the second. Urrea won his match against Jimmy Lange in three sets in the third flight, and Boustany continued his run of good form with a straight-sets win over Nick Barker in flight number five.
Pierre Brondeau and Kyle Chalmers pushed their second and fourth flight matches to three sets before falling, while Jason Sisti succumbed to Tanner Baine in the sixth flight.
In doubles play, Urrea and Chalmers were 8-3 winners in the second flight, but the Patriots took flights one and three to win what turned out to be the decisive doubles point.
The Hawks will look to bounce back on Wednesday with a home match against La Salle at the SJU Tennis Complex.
