Women's Tennis Begins Season With Strong Outings At Tiger Classic

Women's Tennis Kicks Off Play At SJU Invitational

MERION STATION, Pa. - The Saint Joseph's women's tennis team saw its first home action of the season on Friday as the Saint Joseph's Invitational got underway at the SJU Tennis Complex and on Finnesey Courts.

In singles action, Anne Marie Devlin won her opening round match in the fourth singles flight as she topped Renee Nouri, 6-3, 6-2, while Sarah Contrata and Mary-Margaret Ewens both advanced out of the opening round of the fourth singles flight. Contrata was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over La Salle's Kathryn Thomas, while Ewens prevailed as her opponent, Fairfield's Erika Nannery, retired due to injury with Ewens up 6-3, 4-3.

Playing in the third singles flight, SJU newcomer Robyn Ferraro battled, but eventually fell to Olivia Ott, 6-3, 7-5.

In doubles action, a pair of SJU teams advanced to the quarterfinals in the top flight. Claire Minnoe and Kelly Mulquin earned an 8-6 win in their opening match, but fell to Delaware's Danea Jonjic and Arielle Shuren, 8-3.

Senior Aurora Davis and sophomore Alex Zachem posted an 8-2 victory in their opening match, but like their teammates, fell to a Delaware team, dropping an 8-5 contest to Kim Milla and Denny LaMachia.

Rounding out the Hawks in the first doubles flight, Kristina Eisenbrand and Contrata dropped an 8-6 match to Villanova, but will compete in the consolation bracket in the two-match format.

Juniors Devlin and Arianne Polatnick will begin play on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the second doubles flight as they earned a bye in the first round and then advanced with an 8-6 win over Drexel's Kendra Bunch and Ryshena Providence.

Maureen Devlin and Ferraro dropped their opening match today, 8-3, but will begin play in the consolation bracket on Saturday morning.

Rounding out the Hawks in the second doubles flight, Lauren Roy and Ewens earned an 8-1 win over Jayla Smith and Kathryn Thomas of La Salle, but fell to Delaware's Nataliya Naumova and Abby Martinez, 8-4.

Play commences on Saturday morning with the round of 16 in all six flights.  The first doubles matches of the day are slated to begin at 8:30 a.m. at both the SJU Tennis Complex and Finnesey Courts.
