Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The Hawks kicked off Atlantic 10 action in dominating fashion as the Saint Joseph's men's soccer squad downed Massachusetts, 2-0, on Saturday evening on Sweeney Field. With the win, the Hawks have now won three of their last four at home to stand at 3-7-1 overall and 1-0-0 in league play. UMass falls to 1-10 overall and 0-1 in the A-10.
The Hawks and Minutemen combined for six shots over the first 12:07, with the final one resulting in an SJU goal. Junior midfielder Eric Jordan took control of the ball in the middle of the field just outside of the box and dished a perfect pass in to sophomore midfielder Matt Crawford. Crawford put away his second goal of the season to put the Hawks up, 1-0, with his eventual match-winner.
"Matt played at a higher level than he has been playing, so it was good to see him step up and score that first goal to set the tone for the team," said head coach Don D'Ambra. "He had a solid, consistent game."
Senior midfielder Tim Lazorko wasted no time making a difference in his first match back since September 4, lofting a pass down the right side of the field to junior defender Mike Stuski, who then found freshman forward Derek MacKinnon. MacKinnon blasted his shot into the back of the net to give the Hawks a 2-0 advantage with his first collegiate goal in the 50th minute.
"It was good to see Derek get his first goal," added D'Ambra. "He has had some really good opportunities and hasn't been able to find the net, so it was in good fashion to get that second goal. It was an important goal."
Sophomore goalkeeper Bobby Edwards (2-4-1, 1-0-0 A-10) made three saves, all in the first half, to earn his second shutout of the season.
Edwards, Crawford, Jordan, and defenders Bliss Harris and Eddie McCusker played full 90:00 matches for the Crimson and Gray.
For the match, each squad took 12 shots, while UMass held a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Saint Joseph's returns to action this Wednesday, October 7 vs. George Washington. Start time for the Atlantic 10 match-up is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Sweeney Field.
