Box Score PHILADELPHIA – George Washington's Eddie Painter scored in the 103rd minute as the Saint Joseph's men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 double-overtime heartbreaker to the Colonials in Atlantic 10 action on Wednesday evening on Sweeney Field.
George Washington's Spiros Tsakos lifted a ball up to Christian Lawal, who raced up the field toward the left side of the box. Lawal found a streaking Painter, who put away the match-winner in the right corner.
"We played a really tight defensive game with it being 0-0 going into overtime," said head coach Don D'Ambra. "We let at least a point slip away. I thought we had a couple of chances, but neither team was really creating a ton of chances. It was just a battle, and that's our conference. Every game is going to be tight, and you have to make plays. GW made the one play to get that chance, and they put it away. Our guys put in a lot of effort and worked hard . . . We just have to regroup and get ready for our two road matches and hopefully look to get some points on the road."
Sophomore goalkeeper Bobby Edwards (2-5-1, 1-1-0 A-10) matched a career-high six saves in the full 102:12, including four second-half stops.
Saint Joseph's (3-8-1, 1-1-0 A-10) best offensive opportunity came in the 89th minute when senior midfielder Tim Lazorko fired off SJU's only shot on net, but George Washington's Jack Lopez made the save.
On the next possession, GW's Sam Summerlin's close-range shot from the left side of the box was on target, but Edwards made the diving stop in the 90th minute to force the match into overtime.
George Washington (5-5-0, 2-0-0 A-10) held a 15-6 advantage in shots and fired off the only overtime shot. The Hawks and Colonials were an even 4-4 in corner kicks while the physical match-up saw 36 fouls, including four yellow-cards (2-2).
Edwards, defenders Bliss Harris, Eddie McCusker, and Mike Stuski and midfielders Matt Crawford and Eric Jordan played the full 102 for the Crimson and Gray; Crawford led the way with two shots.
Saint Joseph's returns to Atlantic 10 action this Saturday, October 10 at Dayton. Start time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Baujan Field.
