MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team turned in a dominant performance on Wednesday afternoon, sweeping all nine matches en route to a 7-0 rout of Fordham at the SJU Tennis Complex.
Kyle Chalmers and Andres Urrea teamed up for an 8-5 win in the first doubles flight before Tristan Boustany and Kevin Gates logged an 8-6 triumph in the second flight to secure the point. Peter Dewitt and Mike Fallone then completed the doubles sweep with an 8-1 romp in the third.
In singles play, the Hawks won 11 of 12 sets, taking five of the six flights in sweeps. In the top flight, Renier Moolman won a supertiebreaker to defeat Fordham's Pol Giraldez, 6-0, 2-6, 10-8. Pierre Brondeau was a 6-1, 6-1, winner in the second flight, and Chalmers was a 6-4, 6-3, victor in the third.
Urrea, Boustany, and Gates polished off the sweep with wins in the final three flights. Urrea won a 6-2, 6-3, battle in the fourth flight, Boustany cruised to a 6-1, 6-1, victory in the fifth, and Gates won a 6-1, 6-4, decision in the sixth.
Wednesday's win comes on the first of four consecutive matchdays for the Hawks. Saint Joseph's heads to Drexel on Thursday, hosts George Mason on Friday, and travels to NJIT on Saturday.
