MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team turned in a dominant performance on Monday afternoon, dismissing crosstown rival La Salle by a 6-1 score at the SJU Tennis Complex. Five Hawks earned straight sets singles wins as SJU dropped just 16 games in singles play.
Saint Joseph's (8-8) posted a clean sweep of doubles play, limiting the Explorers to winning just five games. Peter Dewitt and Renier Moolman were winners in the first flight by an 8-2 score, while Pierre Brondeau and Mike Fallone won their second-flight tilt by the same score. Tristan Boustany and Kevin Gates then polished off their third flight match with an 8-1 triumph.
In singles play, La Salle (2-12) earned a point in the top flight as Moolman retired after the first set, but the Hawks cruised in each of the other five flights to lock up the victory. Kyle Chalmers and Andres Urrea were 6-0, 6-2, and 6-1, 6-3 winners in the second and third flights, respectively, to get things started, before Boustany won his fourth flight match at love.
Fallone and Gates finished off the match with wins in the fifth and sixth flights; Fallone took flight number five, 6-2, 6-0, and Gates was a 6-1, 6-0 winner in the sixth.
The Hawks will play their final home match of the season on Wednesday when they host Chestnut Hill at 1:00 p.m.
