Box Score PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore transfer forward Isaac Agyapong scored the Hawks' first goal against Davidson in program history, but the Saint Joseph's men's soccer squad had its three-match winning streak snapped by Davidson, 2-1, on Wednesday evening on Sweeney Field. With the loss, the Hawks now stand at 6-6-1 overall (3-1-0 A-10) while Davidson improves to 3-9-0 overall (1-2-0 A-10).
"If we want to win games, we have to defend a little bit better," said Saint Joseph's head coach Don D'Ambra. "But, on the attacking side, we have to do a better job of holding balls up and taking pressure off of the back line."
Davidson's Maxi Pragnell converted a penalty kick (13:06) and added a second score on a header off of a Hunter Howard cross (13:38) to put Davidson up by two goals by the 14th minute.
The Hawks saw an opportunity on a scrum in the box, as sophomore defender Eddie McCusker headed a shot that rocketed off of the left post and came back into play to Agyapong, who beat Davidson's goalkeeper to put away his second goal of the year in the 39th minute.
In the second half, Saint Joseph's took 12 shots and forced Davidson's Andrew Kenneson to make six saves, two of which almost proved to be game-changing; senior midfielder Bliss Harris forced Kenneson to make a finger-tip save just under the cross bar in the 49th minute, while Kenneson made a strong diving stop on senior forward Ted Foley's blast in 86th minute.
"Our guys fought hard," added D'Ambra. "We were the aggressor. I think we outplayed them in the second half and created a lot of dangerous opportunities. You go down 2-0 early, you can just roll over and that's it. We came back and scored a goal and made it a close game."
For the match, Saint Joseph's fired off 19 shots compared to Davidson's 12 and landed nine of those shots on goal. Junior midfielder Matt Crawford took a match-high five shots and landed a match-high four on target, while Agyapong and Foley chipped in three shots apiece.
The Wildcats earned a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Saint Joseph's junior goalkeeper Greg O'Connell (6-6-1, 3-1-0 A-10) made three saves, including two in the first 13:03 and a diving stop to his right in the 57th minute of play.
Saint Joseph's returns to action at George Washington this Saturday, October 15. The afternoon match at the GW Soccer Field is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
