PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team will open the 2016 season at home vs. VMI (0-0) this Saturday, February 20. Opening face-off is slated for 1:00 p.m. on Sweeney Field.

Under the direction of fifth-year head coach Taylor Wray, the Hawks return 31 letterwinners, including seven starters, from last year's squad and add 14 newcomers for the 2016 season. Saint Joseph's returns six All-Northeast Conference selections in 2015 Offensive Player of the Mike Rastivo and 2015 Rookie of the Year Chris Blewitt in addition to First Team defenseman John Winchell and including attackman Pat Swanick, midfielder Kevin Forster, and face-off specialist Mike Lanham, all Second Team picks. The Hawks were picked to finish second in the Northeast Conference this season, according to the conference's preseason poll as announced on February 9.
Saturday's game will mark the 16th time in program history and fifth consecutive season that Saint Joseph's will face VMI; the Hawks own the all-time series, 11-4. SJU is on a six-game winning streak against VMI, dating back to March 28, 2009. Under Wray's direction, the Hawks are 4-0 against the Keydets and have outscored them 47-16 during that stretch.
VMI went 1-14 as a member of the Southern Conference last season.
