NEWARK, Del. - The Saint Joseph's women's tennis team dropped a close matchup at Delaware, 4-3, Wednesday afternoon.
"A hard fought match that went down to the wire against a deep and talented squad," said SJU head coach Ian Crookenden. "Excellent performances from No. 2 doubles and Alex Zachem at No. 4 singles kept SJU close in an exciting contest."
The Hawks (3-8) opened the match winning the doubles point. Kristina Eisenbrand and Sarah Contrata teamed for a 6-3 victory at the second flight, while sisters Anne Marie Devlin and Maureen Devlin earned a victory in the uncontested third flight.
Switching to singles, Alex Zachem earned a hard-fought 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 win at the fourth flight, while Anne Marie Devlin picked up an uncontested win at the sixth flight.
Saint Joseph's Maureen Devlin would go three sets at the second flight, but Delaware's Denny LaMachia earned the decision, while the Blue Hens picked up victories at the other singles flights to earn the team win.
The Hawks return to action on Thursday when they host Villanova at 3 p.m.
