BRONX, N.Y. - The Saint Joseph's women's tennis team capped the road portion of its schedule with a competitive match at Fordham on Sunday. Battling to the final point, the Hawks put up a strong effort, but eventually fell to the Rams, 4-3.
Opening with doubles play, the Hawks took the first point of the match with wins at the second and third flights. Sarah Contrata and Kristina Eisenbrand were 6-0 winners at the second flight, while Anne Marie Devlin and Maureen Devlin earned a hard-fought 7-6 (4) victory at the third flight.
Moving to singles, senior Arianne Polatnick picked up a 6-2, 6-0 victory at the fifth flight, with Alex Zachem earning a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (6) hard-fought win at the fourth flight.
Unfortunately for SJU, Fordham picked up four win in the other flights to earn the team victory.
"A truly epic contest," said SJU head coach Ian Crookenden. "The Hawks played their hearts out against a top-half of the conference team. Excellent doubles followed by some really high-quality singles showed our team is ready to tackle the best the A-10 has at the championships. I am confident we will hold our poise over the upcoming matches and will enter the Championship week well prepared."
Saint Joseph's (6-13) returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Delaware State at 3 p.m.
