MERION STATION, Pa. - The Saint Joseph's women's tennis team made the final home matches of the season a memorable one for its senior class of Anne Marie Devlin, Kristina Eisenbrand, and Arianne Polatnick as the Hawks picked up wins over Rider and Chestnut Hill, 7-0 and 5-2, respectively.
Opening the day against Rider, Saint Joseph's jumped ahead 1-0 with wins at all three flights. Eisenbrand and Sarah Contrata teamed for a 6-1 victory at the top flight, with Anne Marie Devlin teaming with her sister Maureen for a 6-0 win at no. 2 doubles. Polatnick and Robyn Ferraro rounded out the wins with a 6-0 decision at the third flight.
Moving to singles play, the Hawks were dominant winning every flight in two sets. Minnoe was a 6-4, 6-0 winner at the top flight, while Maureen Devlin posted a 6-0, 6-2 win at the second flight.
Alex Zachem earned a 6-2, 6-1 win at the third flight, while Polatnick was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at No. 4 singles Anne Marie Devlin picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win at the fifth flight, while Mary-Margaret Ewens closed out the singles wins with a 6-2, 6-3 decision.
Facing Chestnut Hill later in the day, the senior class put their stamp on their final match on their home court. Eisenbrand and Contrata battled to a 7-5 win at the No. 2 doubles flight, while Anne Marie Devlin teamed with her sister Maureen for a 6-0 victory at the third flight. Minnoe and Zachem picked up a 6-4 win at the top flight to sweep the opening matches.
Moving to singles, Zachem earned SJU's first win with a 6-0, 6-1 decision at the fourth flight, while Anne Marie Devlin picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win at the sixth flight. Polatnick picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the fifth flight for SJU's fourth point, while Eisenbrand earned the Hawks' final point with a 1-6, 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles.
"A good day for the Hawks adding two wins to the schedule and getting excellent preparation for A-10 Championships," said SJU head coach Ian Crookenden. "I can not single anyone out as it was a fine team effort. I am very pleased for the ladies to conclude their home stand in such a positive manner."
Saint Joseph's (8-13) will begin play at the 2016 Atlantic 10 Championship later this week, with seeds to be announced on Monday or Tuesday.
