LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Saint Joseph's golf team opened their 2016-17 with an impressive showing as the Hawks posted a tournament record 275 (-5) in the first round of the Bucknell Invitational on Saturday.
Playing at the Bucknell Golf Club (6,224 yards, par 70), SJU fired a 275 to surpass the previous record of 276 set by Bucknell in 2009 and currently lead second place La Salle by nine strokes.
Competing in his first collegiate event, rookie Michael O'Brien posted a four-under-par 66 to hold the individual lead, while junior Tyler Sokolis is in fourth place just two shots behind O'Brien at 68.
Freshman Reed Winkler carded an even-par 70 in his first collegiate experience and is in ninth place, while senior Drew Taylor is tied for 10th at 71. Sophomore Ross Pilliod rounded out the five-man squad with score of 73 to finish in a tie for 20th.
The final round of the Bucknell Invitational begins at 8 a.m. on Sunday.
