Men's Soccer Falls in Double Overtime to Northeastern, 1-0

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – Northeastern's Khesanio Hall scored the match-winner in the 101st minute to hand the Saint Joseph's men's soccer squad a 1-0 double-overtime loss in SJU's home opener on Friday evening on Sweeney Field. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 0-2-0 overall while Northeastern improves to 1-1-0.

"Our guys played with a lot of heart," said head coach Don D'Ambra. "We were well-disciplined, defensively. Northeastern is a good attacking team with a lot of dangerous players. We put ourselves in a position to win the game. We had a couple of breakdowns in overtime, and they capitalized."

Hall took a feed from Jack Reynolds and put away the match-winning goal from 12 yards out.

Saint Joseph's had gone down to 10 men just 28 seconds prior due to an accumulation of yellow cards.

"This is something to build off of," added D'Ambra. "This was a better effort than our game against Temple. We hope to keep getting better and to learn from this. We have such a long season to go, but I do feel that we should have gotten out of there with a point. It is upsetting."

For the match, Northeastern held a 24-8 advantage in shots and earned 16 of the match's 18 total corner kicks.

Freshman midfielder Ramzi Saim led SJU with four shots, while he and junior midfielder Matt Crawford landed SJU's only two shots on net. Crawford had one of SJU's best looks late with a shot just wide in the 83rd minute, while Saim took a perfectly-placed pass from senior defender Bliss Harris and nearly put one away in the 88th minute.

Junior goalkeeper Greg O'Connell (0-2-0) made a career-high eight saves in the full-match effort, including a brilliant, diving stop to his right in the 81st minute. Six of O'Connell's eight saves came in the second half, and the junior made a strong save in the 91st minute of the first overtime period as well.

"He did great," said D'Ambra of O'Connell's performance. "He made two game-changing saves. Our defense did a tremendous job, but he came up big when he had to . . . He has done well."

Saint Joseph's returns to action this Sunday, September 4 when the Hawks host Pittsburgh at 7:00 p.m. on Sweeney Field.
