MERION STATION, Pa. - The Saint Joseph's women's tennis team capped a weekend of conference matches with a close battle with George Mason on Sunday. Despite splitting the six singles matches, the Patriots would come out with a 4-3 win backed by their doubles point victory.
Opening the match in doubles play, George Mason earned the first point with wins at all three flights.
In singles play, Claire Minnoe earned a 6-1, 6-4 victory at the top flight, with classmate Alex Zachem earning a 6-1, 6-3 win at the fourth flight. Sarah Contrata battled to a 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-2 victory at the sixth flight, but George Mason was able to win the other three singles flights to win the overall match.
"The doubles point made the difference in this close battle," said SJU head coach Ian Crookenden. "We lost two, three set matches which might have gone our way, but honestly the match was a toss up all the way. Again steady performances from Claire and Alex and Sarah were the highlight of the match for the Hawks."
The Hawks (4-9) are back in action on Wednesday at Drexel.
