MERION STATION, Pa. – Despite grabbing the doubles point, the Saint Joseph's men's tennis team ultimately fell to Dayton, 4-2, at the SJU Tennis Complex on Sunday. Junior Peter Dewitt won both of his matches for the Hawks.
Dewitt teamed with sophomore Dan Tan to secure a 7-5 doubles victory in the third flight to clinch the doubles point for the Hawks. Earlier, freshmen Scott Battaglia and Beekman Schaeffer took the second flight, 6-3, to put SJU in a position to take the early lead.
Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, Dewitt's 6-3, 6-0 cruise in the fifth flight was the only singles match to go the home team's way, as Dayton won each of the top four flights en route to taking the team result.
“The 4-2 final score demonstrated a close contest highlighted by the Hawks taking the doubles point,” head coach Ian Crookenden said. “The singles matches also demonstrated that three tough matches in a row drained our players a little too much and we did not have the legs of the previous days. The heart and fight were there, but Dayton prevailed.”
The Hawks will look to bounce back on Tuesday when they host crosstown rival La Salle. Play is set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
