OLEAN, N.Y. - Backed by five singles victories, the Saint Joseph's women's tennis team downed St. Bonaventure, 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon at the St. Bonaventure Fitness Center.
Junior Laura Gomez and rookie Lourdes Sprinckmoller earned a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles to open the match, but the Bonnies earned the first team point with victories at the first and third flights.
Moving to singles play, the Hawks dominated, taking five of the six matches. Freshman Amanda Nava picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win at the top flight, while Gomez earned her second win of the day with a 6-3, 6-2 decision at No. 2 singles.
Isis Gill-Reid breezed to a straight-set win at the fourth flight, 6-1, 6-1, with Sprinckmoller posting a 6-0, 6- victory at No. 5 singles. Freshman Madeline Hill wrapped up the match for SJU with a 6-0, 6-1 win at the sixth flight.
"The ladies finally put together a performance worthy of their abilities and talents," said SJU head coach Ian Crookenden. "Despite losing the doubles point, they rebounded magnificently in singles play. Especially Isis, and freshmen Lourdes and Madeline."
The Hawks (1-7) are back in action on Friday at Duquesne at 10 a.m.
