RICHMOND, Va. – The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team opened its weekend of Atlantic 10 play at Richmond, falling to the Spiders by a 6-1 score at the Westhampton Courts on Friday afternoon.
“It was another tough fight against a highly-regarded conference opponent,” head coach Ian Crookenden said after the match. “The scores indicate some matches could have gone our way, but home court advantage made a big difference.”
Richmond (7-8 overall, 3-1 Atlantic 10) took the early lead, winning the doubles point. After the Spiders took the first-flight match, Peter Dewitt and Dan Tan knotted things up with a 6-3 win in the third, but UR claimed a 6-4 result in flight number two to secure the point.
Michael Santa Lucia continued his solid singles play of late, earning a point for Saint Joseph's (4-7 overall, 1-4 Atlantic 10) in the fifth flight via a 7-5, 2-6, 10-4 supertiebreaker victory over brice Polender, but the Spiders swept the remaining flights to come away with the overall triumph.
The Hawks will look to bounce back right away as they visit George Washington on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
