MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team posted some solid performances on Wednesday afternoon, but unfortunately for the depleted Crimson and Gray, Drexel clinched the match early en route to a 4-0 win at the SJU Tennis Complex.
“Despite missing some players due to injury, we had a good battle against Drexel,” assistant coach Marc Pibernat said after the match. “We were very competitive in the top positions which, due to the match being clinched, did not show up in the scoreline.”
Saint Joseph's (5-11) started off the day with a doubles win, as Peter DeWitt and Dan Tan notched a 6-2 victory in the third flight. The Dragons, however, earned the doubles point with triumphs in the first two flights.
Drexel (12-5) locked down the match with straight sets singles wins in the fourth, fifth, and sixth slots. The Hawks had strong play from Tim Stierle in flight number one, however, as the senior was a point away from putting away Hamza Laalej when play was called.
Andre Fick also led his match, a second singles tilt with Balaji Lakshmanan, when play was halted.
The Hawks will look to regroup in a road match at Rider before hosting Lehigh on Sunday.
