Saint Joseph's Isis Gill-Reid and Lourdes Sprinckmoller earned singles victories, but the visiting Richmond Spiders earned the team win over the Hawks' women's tennis team, 5-2, Friday afternoon at the SJU Tennis Complex.
Facing Gaby Rosales at the fourth singles flight, Gill-Reid battled in a match decided by the super breaker. In the decisive play, Gill-Reid proved the victor, earning a 6-2, 1-6, 10-7 win.
Like Gill-Reid, Sprinckmoller also went to the super breaker in her match at the fifth flight. Playing Richmond's Adrienne Haynes, the SJU rookie prevailed in the end, 6-2, 2-6, 12-10.
Richmond would win the overall match with victories at the other four singles flight and claimed the doubles point.
"Another strong day for the Hawks against a top ranked conference foe. Strong singles play highlighted by two wins by Isis and Lourdes, both in 10-point super breakers. Another great performance at the number one position by freshman Amanda Nava who was pipped 6-4 in the third set," said SJU head coach Ian Crookenden. "Outdoor play suits us well and the ladies are playing consistently well."
The Hawks (3-14) are back in action on Saturday at Rider.
