Saint Joseph's freshman Amanda Nava earned a victory at the top singles flight, but the Hawks' women's tennis team fell to rival Villanova, 4-1, in tough playing conditions at the SJU Tennis Complex on Thursday.
Playing through strong winds and unseasonably cold temperatures, the Hawks fell behind the Wildcats, 1-0, as the visitors earned wins at the second and third singles flight. Maureen and Katherine Devlin battled in the third flight before falling, 7-5, while Nava and Isis Gill-Reid were tied at 5-5 in their match against Lindsey Evans and Victoria Martinez before it was called.
Moving to singles play, Nava earned a 6-0, 6-3 win over Lexi DeNucci at the top flight.
That would be SJU's lone point on the day as Villanova captureed the second, fifth and sixth flights.
"A tough match made tougher by harsh conditions," said SJU head coach Ian Crookenden. "A close doubles where we let opportunities slip away at No. 1 & No. 3. Despite a good win at No. 1 by Amanda, we were trailing all afternoon. Not having Lourdes available (for singles) because of illness also depleted our balance at the bottom of the lineup."
Saint Joseph's (3-10) is back in action at Fordham on Saturday. Due to poor weather forecasted for the day, the match has been moved to Lifetime Fitness Center with start time slated for around 6 p.m.
