Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A Frantz Pierrot goal late in the first half put the Hawks ahead and a second-half insurance goal from Alvin Dahn sealed the deal as the Saint Joseph's men's soccer team notched its second consecutive victory and fourth in its last five matches with a 2-0 result over Fairfield at Lessing Field on Saturday night.
Neither team had anything going in the early stages of the game, with the Stags taking the only three shots of the game's opening half hour. Freshman Joseph Boehm was called on to make saves in the 28th and 31st minutes to keep the game scoreless before the game opened up in the final five minutes of the period.
Saint Joseph's (6-3-0) would get on the board shortly before halftime as Pierrot found paydirt from long range, sending a shot over the Stags' Gordon Botterill and into the net for a 1-0 lead with 1:26 to play in the first half. The goal was the freshman's second of the season.
Fairfield (3-4-0) held the possession advantage throughout the second half, totaling seven shots, but only putting one on target. With the game in the balance, Dahn used his speed to his advantage and took off on a breakaway from midfield, slotting it past Botterill for his fifth of the season to double the Hawk lead with just 11:55 to play.
Boehm would turn away an effort from Fairfield's Diallo Simon-Ponte in the 80th minute, and from there, the Hawk defense held firm. The Stags had a corner kick opportunity in the game's dying embers, but could not create a scoring opportunity before the match ended.
The win is the second consecutive clean sheet for the Hawks, who have conceded just twice in their last 414:34 of play. Boehm made three stops on the night, while Botterill did not record a save in the match. The Stags outshot the Hawks, 11-4, while SJU worked seven corner opportunities while allowing just two for the home side.
The Hawks are idle until Saturday, September 29, when they visit Duquesne for their Atlantic 10 opener. Game time in Pittsburgh is set for 7:00 p.m.
