Box Score PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Freshman goalkeeper Joseph Boehm made a career-high 13 saves to backstop the Saint Joseph's men's soccer squad to a 2-2 draw with Duquesne in the Atlantic 10 opener at Rooney Field on Saturday evening. The match marked the Hawks' first overtime performance of the season.
The Hawks (6-3-1, 0-0-1 A-10) took a 2-0 advantage into the halftime break after sophomore midfielder Ritchie Barry put away his fourth of the year, assisted by sophomore midfielder Alvin Dahn, in the 12th minute and freshman forward Frantz Pierrot hit the back of the net for the third time this season, assisted by sophomore midfielder Alan Kahlenbeck, in the 36th minute.
"We had some great individual plays that were able to get us a couple of crucial goals on the road, but we did not play to our potential," said head coach Don D'Ambra following the match. "Duquesne gained a lot of confidence after they scored. They were a lot more aggressive, so we ended up having to defend more than we initially intended."
Boehm (6-3-1, 0-0-1 A-10) made eight first-half saves, including four in the first 11:27 and two in the final 1:12, to keep the Dukes off the scoreboard through the first 30:00.
Duquesne (2-5-2, 0-0-1 A-10) responded just 3:39 into the second half as Manel Busquets took advantage of a blocked shot, by teammate Austin Stout, knocked back into play; Busquets found the back of the net to cut the Dukes' deficit to one, 2-1, in the 49th minute.
Moments later, Stout found Ian Larson for the Duquesne equalizer at the 60:20 mark.
Boehm would recover to make the final three saves asked of him in the half (75', 81', and 87') while freshman midfielder Garrett Lyons made a match-saving stop in the 77th minute to earn the Hawks a team save.
Duquesne's Ryan Landy fired off a shot with eight ticks remaining in regulation, but it went wide to send the match into overtime.
The Dukes took 23 shots in regulation compared to the Hawks' five, which all came in the first half.
SJU took one shot in overtime and came about as close it could come without putting away the match-winner; sophomore midfielder Aidan Watkins hit the crossbar in the 92nd minute.
Boehm made his final save in the 100th minute, and the second overtime frame did not see a shot from either squad as the 2-2 score would stand as time expired.
The defensive core of senior captain Eddie McCusker, redshirt junior captain Mike Fornaro, and sophomores David Grana and Daniel Morales and midfielders Watkins and Lyons added full-match efforts alongside Boehm.
