MEDIA, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team took on a strong conference foe in Davidson on Friday night at the Springton Indoor Tennis Club. The Hawks put forth an encouraging effort, but ultimately fell short as the Wildcats emerged with a 4-2 victory.
The visitors grabbed the early edge via doubles victories in the second and third flights. The Hawks did take the top-flight match, however, as senior Andre Fick and sophomore Nathan Perrone earned a 6-4 victory over Axel Fries and Yash Parikh.
Davidson took control of the match with singles wins in both the fourth and fifth flights, but Saint Joseph's battled back to within a point as Fick and Perrone were winners in the second and first flights, respectively. Fick rolled past Parikh, 6-4, 6-2, before Perrone finished off Fries, 6-4, 7-5.
Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, the Wildcats secured a win in the third flight while senior Dan Tan was on the court in prime position to possibly tie the match in the sixth. Tan was level at a set apiece with Douglas Macintosh when play was halted.
“It was an excellent match with strong performances from our #1 and #2 singles,” head coach Ian Crookenden said. “The team is getting stronger every match and is more competitive with each match they play. It was a good match against a strong conference opponent.”
The Hawks will look to bounce back right away as they host Fairfield at Springton on Saturday night.
